Me and Jon Gerrard waiting for the bus,..

Well, he wasn't actually WAITING for the bus.
Just as I realised I missed my connecting bus, a Liberal Party van pulls up. "Hmmmm, maybe they can drive me work!" -I thought. Low and behold, Jon Gerrard, ( who is currently running for provincial premier) got out of the Van and was joined by three sign waivers carrying brochures,... first thing he did was walk straight up to me (the only person at the bus stop then) and shook my hand - "Good Morning, Jon Gerrard". I asked him to change the weather in Manitoba and improve the transit system,...hmmm, we'll see.
I don't think I will ever vote Liberal in my life time (although I think Chretien is doing a good job), but it was a neat suprise,... you never know what can happen when you miss your bus. He is a very bouncy and energetic man as he waived to drivers-by. - Elections are on June 3rd.

Bright guy
Jon Gerrard was the only MB provincial election candidate to actually come to the conference on Candian city infrastructure needs yesterday. I give him bonus points for that... it's rare that election candidates go to events to listen and learn. Most will only show up if they get to speak - thus giving them profile and votes.

Another plus for the provincial liberals.... they are the party with the strongest stand on young people. Check out the platform info at http://www.manitobaliberals.ca/updateable/files/platform_for_web_en.pdf. Nice quotes like, "The key to real growth is with real people,
beginning with the youth of our province."

Guilt and confusion!
Its when I read things like that, I feel awful for leaving Winnipeg. Its tough when I, myself would like to work to retain young talent in Manitoba, yet find it hard to get my own career started here. I feel stuck, and hypocritical at the same time. But then I think, I can go away to get the experience I need, and then return to give back to my city. Then, who knows where my fate lies.
Actually, later that day, I spent time reading up on the history of the parties running and their mandates. I always feel most comfortable with NDP – Bill Blakie has been apart of my community as long as I can remember. PC well,… grrrrr! – at least at a national level. That provoked me to search for wage difference between provinces. I found postings that BOASTED, what I would consider meager wages even in Winnipeg - almost at the local poverty line. How is anyone ever going to pay off student loans? My Calgary friends are making double that right out of University – and Oh! The benefits packages! The labour market is so competitive. Although, Liberal leadership has worked well (or okay, as long as you are capable of working) in Alberta, I am not yet convinced that they would be good for Manitoba. We are unique and,… “prairie-like”. Most young people are still more interested in marriage and babies and camping and fishing, than their career or a competitive market. – hmmm, I think this debate was on “Adler” last week (a local radio talk show).

- I really wish I could have gone to the Cities conference,... had to work.:(
